Retro Bingo

You know you've had a good night when you return home on the Metro with a box of cakes, a space hopper and a 6 foot inflatable dinosaur!

My evening began, as a lot do, with a lovely collection of North East Bloggers.   We gathered in Newcastle's Jazz Café for an evening of "Retro Bingo" with Joe Blogs and bgo.  Confession time!  I've never played Bingo in my life and so didn't have a clue how to play.

Luckily, for our Bingo night we'd swapped numbers for music and if there's one thing I am good at it's recognising cheesy pop tunes!   Our DJ for the evening played a great mixture of sing along tunes, cheesy pop and rock classics that we matched with our Bingo sheets.

As the wine and beer flowed we were soon singing along to anything and everything, waving our dabbers in the air like they were lighters or, in my case, using it as a microphone to sing along to Boyzone.

I have to admit I wasn't overly good at Bingo, I know it's a game of luck but there are some certain basic skills required such as taking the lid off your dabber and stopping yourself from chatting long enough to actually listen to the music and join in the game!

It took me a while to find my stride but finally, after a bit of help from my table, I realised that I had a line and could finally leap up and shout "BINGO!"   The prizes for the night were retro goodies so I'm now the proud owner of a space hopper, don't be surprised if you find me jumping along the Quayside on it tomorrow lunchtime.

I'm pretty proud of myself because I've made it this far through a blog post without mentioning food, and boy do I have some food to share with you!

The Jazz Café is a bit of a secret food haven, they serve up the most delicious freshly made scran.    They put on a rather splendid spread for us including sandwiches stuffed full with delicious flavours, roasted vegetable crisps, pasta dishes and salads.   It certainly made me sit up and take notice and it wont be too long until I'm back there with Simon for a spot of Saturday lunch.

I hate to be predictable, but the food that truly blew me away was the cake!  The café had made us a Victoria Sponge (which everyone agreed was the best cake they'd ever had), Lemon Sponge, Chocolate Crisp Squares and, my personal favourite, Honey and Banana Cake.

We all know that I can't leave cake untouched so I rather shamefully tried a bit of every single piece on offer and then took some more home in a box.  It was absolutely delicious and I'm feeling rather smug that I may have stumbled across somewhere amazing that some people might not know about.

I will definitely be returning to the Jazz Café to try out more soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

So it's probably about time I let you know how I ended up with a 6 foot dinosaur.   Well, that my lovely readers, was my prize for providing the best tweets of the night.   Yes, I am now an award winning tweeter so make sure you're following me on Twitter so you can decide for yourself  if I was the worthy winner of the dinosaur!

I'd love to be able to tell you that me and the dinosaur stepped onto the Metro hand in hand but, I couldn't quite face the thought, so we deflated it.  Believe me you haven't lived until you've seen two grown men straddling an inflatable dinosaur!

Big thanks to Joe Blogs, the lovely North East Bloggers and bgo for such an entertaining night.
