Mrs Tiggy-Winkles Cafe, Fenwick's Christmas Department Newcastle

Nowhere in Newcastle does Christmas as well as my favourite department store, Fenwick. Christmas just isn't Christmas without the obligatory visit to the famous Christmas Window followed by a stroll round the Fenwick's Christmas Department and this year it's made extra special by the arrival of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's Cafe.

If you hadn't already heard, this year's Fenwick's Christmas Department and Window is Beatrix Potter themed in celebration of her 150 year anniversary and after our visit to the World of Beatrix Potter a few months ago I really can't get enough of Peter Rabbit and his chums!

I made my first visit of the year to the Fenwick's Christmas Department last week and was completely enchanted by the beautiful theme, so much so I immediately text half of my phone book to let all my friends know that this years Christmas Department beats all others. The decor is adorable with some beautiful illustrations from the world of Beatrix Potter and plenty of characters to spot. I highly recommend a visit. If you can't wait then check out this great blog by North East Family Fun.

Something you may not know is that hidden away in this years Christmas Department is Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's pop-up cafe, I honestly think it might be Newcastle's best kept secret this festive season. I haven't heard anyone mention it and it came as a complete surprise to me!

Named after Beatrix Potter's famous hedgehog character, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's Cafe serves up Breakfast, Lunch and Afternoon Tea to hungry festive shoppers in her adorable kitchen tucked away on the Second Floor of Fenwicks. The walls are cleverly decorated with Beatrix Potter style illustrations which gives the amazing illusion of stepping directly into the pages of her famous children's books.

The pop-up cafe is larger than you'd expect so I was very happy to find a few spare tables when I popped in on a busy Thursday lunchtime.  The cafe is table service with some lovely friendly ladies looking after you which is just what you need after a busy morning Christmas shopping.

I was so surprised at how extensive the menu was for a pop-up and loved how each dish was named after characters from Beatrix Potter books. Dishes that caught my eye included Mr McGregor's Ploughman's Lunch, Tom Kitten's Broth and, of course, Peter Rabbit's Afternoon Tea which Im going to have to return for.

With Christmas tunes playing in the background I couldn't help but get into the festive spirit by ordering myself the most tempting Christmas dish on the menu - Tabitha Twitchit's Roast Turkey Breast Farmhouse Sandwich (£7.00). Stuffed full with cranberry sauce and gingerbread stuffing and served with Benjamin Bunny's carrow slaw and salad garnish, it was absolutely delicious, really filling and I was a big fan of the gingerbread stuffing which really added something special to my festive sandwich.

Unfortunately I didn't have time for any cake! I am very very sad about that because we all know how much I love cake and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's homemade cakes looked amazing. I don't think I've ever been in a cafe with such a beautiful spread of sweet treats on the counter. I wanted to try a slice of everything on offer and it broke my heart to leave without any cake!

Good things come to those who wait and I will definitely be returning as soon as possible for a huge slab of something delicious. Something tells me I'll be obsessively dreaming about those wedges of cake until I get some in my tummy (just look at that thick spread of chocolate in the fudge cake!).

Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's cafe isn't the cheapest place in Newcastle to grab a sandwich with prices pretty similar to Mason + Rye in the Food Hall downstairs. However, I think for the experience and great service it's worth the money and the food was delicious.

If you needed any more incentive to visit Fenwicks there is loads going on this Christmas time.  You can order a turkey from the Blagdon Farm Shop or create your own hamper in the Food Hall, there's a 20% off shopping event in store on 16 November or how about indulging yourself at the Jo Malone Glitter Box event on 19 November?

Has anyone else made it to Mrs Tiggy-Winkles pop up yet?  Please tell me you tried the cake!

  6. Had breakfast with our 2.5 year old grandson. We finished our breakfast before his boiled egg and soldiers arrived. When his breakfast did arrive the butter had melted over his plate and the knife he was given was huge so he was upset that he couldn't butter his own toast. The buffet breakfast was okay but surprised to see sweet and savoury scones for breakfast. The yogurt was delicious.I think the Beatrice Potter theme could be carried on by using appropriate crockery. When paying the bill we were overcharged which was rectified when I pointed it out. The customer behind was also overcharged. This seems to be just another place in Fenwicks to eat but nothing special.

  7. Fenwick's is, as you say, definitely the place to visit in Newcastle for Christmas.. Saying that and not living too close means it has been a wee while, shall we say, since I last visited. :/
I love the inclusion of Beatrix Potter. It looks amazing and very yummy!
I have no that you will, if not that you haven't already, returned for cake. :)
