Forever attempting to be helpful (I promise I do try!) I thought I'd put together a guide to the best restaurants, bars and coffee shops near Central Train Station Newcastle. I don't know about you but whenever I'm planning a trip to a new city one of the first things I research is where there is to eat and drink near the train station.

The Best Pubs and Bars near Central Station Newcastle

The Town Wall

Opposite Central Station on Pink Lane you'll find The Town Wall. Popular with Newcastle's after work crowd, the pub offers a lively and friendly bar with plenty of tables, an extensive drinks list and some tasty scran. It's so handy for the train station that back in the days when I was travelling from London up to Newcastle to see Simon we would meet in the Town Wall on a Friday night, he'd always have a drink ready for me because, let's face it, train journeys on a Friday evening are not the most fun.

The Gin Bar

The Gin Bar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel is tucked just behind Central Station and is a great place to go if you love gin and sitting on ridiculously comfy chairs. Relaxing after a train journey never felt so good! As you would expect there's a large range of gins and mixers available to create your own drinks as well as cocktails, beers, spirits and wines.

The Forth

One of the cosiest pubs in Newcastle, you'll find The Forth on Pink Lane just opposite Central Station. Although it looks tiny from the outside when you get through the doors you'll be pretty surprised at what's hidden inside. The Forth is far bigger than it looks with plenty of secret little corners to explore. The atmosphere is great and there are always some fantastic local ales and craft beers available.

Jalou

If you like your bars to be buzzing and fancy grabbing yourself a little taste of the Geordie life then Jalou will be right up your street. Only a few doors down from the train station, the bar is the place to go if you love cocktails.  Home of the famous, Cookie Monster, Jalou has a huge menu full of deliciously creative cocktails that range from the classic to the absurd.

The Best Coffee Shops near Central Station Newcastle

Pink Lane Coffee

Sure there's a Starbucks directly opposite Central Station but if you prefer your coffee with a bit more personality there's no place like Pink Lane Coffee.  The independent coffee shop is well loved in Newcastle and the perfect place to grab a coffee while you wait for your train. Huge fans of local produce, they also stock delicious sandwiches, cakes and breakfast pastries.

Zapatista

Not got time for a sit down meal before your train? Zapatista is the best destination for quick food on the go and wow are they good.  Offering the very best traditional Mexican burritos in Newcastle, Zapatista is the kind of place you'll be talking about for days to come. Possibly not the tidiest food to eat on your train, but definitely the tastiest!

Chicken Coop

Everyone loves a cheeky Nandos but here in Newcastle we have our own local version that's far superior Coop Chicken House a short 5 minute stroll from Central Station. Their chicken is cooked over a fire pit, they have 23 sauces available (including nuclear if that's what floats your boat) and if all that wasn't enough they're hilarious on Twitter!

Herb Garden

If you want to return from your trip to Newcastle with stories to tell then the Herb Garden is a must visit. Housed in the old railway arches, you'll find a lot to write home about. From the horse on roller skates who greets you at the doors to the laboratory herbs and ceiling full of paper lanterns; this is somewhere you'll be talking about for a while. Luckily the food is just as good as the decor with plenty of delicious pizza and salad dishes available

Hawthorns at the Crowne Plaza Hotel offer a delicious menu using food from around the North East including locally produced meats, cheeses and bread. A short walk from the train station, Hawthorns is the perfect place for a hearty meal after a long train journey.

Central Oven and Shaker

Directly opposite Central Station  you'll find Central Oven and Shaker where the pizzas are so huge they fall off the plate. With plentiful toppings and stringy cheese, Central offer some of the very finest pizza in Newcastle as well as a full range of sides and a fun cocktail menu.

  1. Fab suggestions. I walked past the train station last weekend and the whole area was so busy with people drinking outside in the sunshine. My vote goes to the GIN bar. I love it x

  2. Chloe, this is a great idea of a post.
I too, although not always on the train, always look for things immediately around the hotel where we're staying for things to do and eat and drink. :)
We're hoping to have a weekend away in Newcastle this year, as haven't been in 3 years now (for a good mooch) so will definitely save and consult this guide!
