In 2008 a security guard called on me when I was trying to take a photo of Metrocentre's Christmas tree and at the same time he was telling me off, a few metres from me, there was a young man taking a photo of the same tree with his mobile phone. How come I get told off and he doesn't? The only difference between him and I was that I was using a Kodak camera and he was using his phone and he could pass for someone just texting instead of taking a photo.Jorgelinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17115058007056732757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505716782309030758.post-79634370525200393312014-03-06T19:17:01.912+00:002014-03-06T19:17:01.912+00:00No not at all :) I'm not going to let a mise...No not at all :) I'm not going to let a miserable security guard put me off what I love doing. One of the artists who exhibits with us had a similar problem. He went through the right channels (intu). He had to wear a hi vis jacket & even then got stopped by several over zealous security guards. He didn't mind them stopping him. The security guard expained some people had been caught taking photos of young children. It was one of the art shops on the sea front and the man was pretty rude about it. I see people's points about stealing design's etc but at the same time, perhaps they should ask the person what they're taking the picture for first - especially as bloggers provide a bit of free exposure for their store/restaurant.

Now I am careful and do ask shop owners before I take pictures. I do get embarrassed but I just think the worst they can say is no and it's not the end of the world. If anything, it's their loss!

So don't let this put you off snapping your community, maybe just keep in mind to ask before you get trigger happy ;-)

Smaz Says

xxSmazhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01577816062186510386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505716782309030758.post-60676607358359485962014-03-05T07:20:36.950+00:002014-03-05T07:20:36.950+00:00I honestly had no idea you couldn't go around ...I honestly had no idea you couldn't go around taking photos in a shopping centre, it still confuses me! Although it's obviously privately owned I thought it was very much there for the public to enjoy .. so odd! I do try and be very careful about taking photos of people without their permission and don't get in folks way or anything but not being allowed to take photos of something that's sitting there stationery when all you want to do is promote the business seems madness :(

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts xNew Girl in Toonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16656888897233646613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505716782309030758.post-42671853993790203442014-03-05T00:12:34.479+00:002014-03-05T00:12:34.479+00:00It really seems to be an issue in shopping centres...It really seems to be an issue in shopping centres in the UK and Ireland. I work as a reporter with a local paper and if I'm doing a story in a mall with our photographer we have to sign in with security and he can't include any shop signs in his shots. As an amateur photographer and blogger, it annoys me that I can take photos in galleries or museums although it seems to be permitted in Europe and the US. I'm always wary about taking photos of other people's children, even in public places. I think some street photographers will ask permission before taking people's pics but others think it spoils the moment. And yes, the whole thing phone thing has made it ridiculous.Mairéadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12102610500647326693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505716782309030758.post-3908699294992542032014-03-03T19:21:45.695+00:002014-03-03T19:21:45.695+00:00Thank you :) When I told him it was for my blog ...Thank you :) When I told him it was for my blog he looked really confused, I'm not sure he understood what a blog was!New Girl in Toonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16656888897233646613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505716782309030758.post-35219877333657673802014-03-03T19:20:44.209+00:002014-03-03T19:20:44.209+00:00Grrrrrrrr that is annoying, especially after you c...Grrrrrrrr that is annoying, especially after you checked about for a sign! It's society gone mad! But i had my own experience of this. When i went to france a few years ago, i visited this amazing cathedral that had the most stunning statues and artwork and i thought it would be a good idea to take a photo for my cousin ( she is a design student ). It didn't say anywhere that i couldn't take a photo but when i did, this french guy approached me and kicked right off! Luckily i understood french and he was telling me that the noise from my camera shutter echoed through the church and could shatter the glass?! What the actual hell?! I had a canon digital camera, hardly a noisy piece of kit.
