Pancake Day at Monsieur Crepe Cafe, Heaton - Menu Review

Occasions like Pancake Day are the best as they offer a great excuse to try somewhere new. Monsieur Crepe Cafe in Heaton has been on my "must visit" list ever since it opened its doors at the end of 2016 so when I was researching places to try on Pancake Day in the North East I knew I had to plan a pancake date.

Pancake Day at Monsieur Crepe Cafe, Heaton - Menu Review

We arrived on a Saturday morning to a cafe full of people, always a great sign of good food but a little worrying when you've just made a special journey for pancakes. Having been hit with the most delicious smells as soon as we'd swung open the door I was panicking that we'd be turned away to walk the streets with empty bellies.

I needn't have worried. Monsieur Crepe Cafe is the kind of place where every customer is made to feel important. We were greeted by warm smiles and friendly faces and within moments a space had been found for us. During our visit we were amazed at the amount of people who came flooding through the door and despite being so busy each person was seated within minutes. The Monsieur Crepe Cafe have managed to achieve something truly amazing - they run a very tight and organised ship yet you never feel rushed or unwelcome.

Settling down at our table I took a moment to admire the beautiful cafe with its reclaimed wooden tables and twinkling fairy lights before my eyes were drawn to the counter of delicious looking cakes. I made a mental note to return for afternoon tea on our next visit.

We eagerly studied the menu and were amazed at the amount of choice. Monsieur Crepe Cafe offer the most impressive range of crepes and pancake stacks, if you're looking for somewhere to head on Pancake Day this really does have to be the one - there were so many dishes we were wanting to try we were struggling to make a choice.

Some of the crepes that caught my eye included Poached Apple & Salted Caramel, Peach & White Chocolate and Chocolate, Crunchie & Marshmallow. Safe to say there are plenty that I want to try so I don't think it'll be long before we're returning to try some more (I feel a new obsession coming on!) I'm also very curious about the Sunday Roast Crepe - a full Sunday lunch with all the trimmings served in a crepe? Yes please!

So what did I go for in the end? Banana, Ginger Crumb and Salted Caramel (£3.95) and it tasted just as good as it sounds. The crepe was perfect, the right level of thickness without being too stodgy, the salted caramel sauce was heavenly and wow did it taste good with the ginger crumb.

Simon decided to go for one of the American Pancake Stacks that features as part of the all day breakfast menu. Given the choice of a two or three pancake stack he went for three, if you're going to indulge you may as well do it properly.  He chose the Banana & Salted Caramel (£3.25) and when the dish was put in front of him his jaw dropped to the floor. I don't think he was expecting such a huge portion. The pancakes were thick, the toppings were generous and my pancake obsessed husband couldn't finish his plate! Yes the Monsieur Crepe Cafe defeated Simon - amazing!

As we headed to the till to pay our bill I found myself desperately wanting to tell this little place how awesome they are but I couldn't quite find the words. It's not often somewhere leaves me feeling quite so lost for words but believe me Monsieur Crepe Cafe are truly special and it's amazing local businesses like this that make me so happy that I live in the North East.

The best part? They take table bookings! So make sure you get yourself booked in for Pancake Day as soon as possible because something tells me they are going to be very busy.

  1. I've never been to the cafe but I've treated myself to Monsieur Crepe crepes at Tynemouth Market more than a few times. I must make a visit soon.
